Port-au-Prince, 08 August [AlterPresse] --- Duckens Orius, a cameraman
from the private TV station, Canal 11, was beaten up by police oficers
in the violent area of Solino on 6 August, according
to news reported by the private radio station, Mélodie FM.
The incident occured when the cameraman was trying to film police
who were carrying out an operation to dislodge armed bandits who
occupy
this violent area of the Haitian capital.
In an AlterPresse telephone interview with the director general
of Canal 11, Jean Paul Elie, he said that the "police officers
confiscated the cameraman's work equipment". According to him,
a camera and its cassette, a battery, and a walkie-talkie, were
damaged. Jean Paul Elie confirmed that he had met with the chiefs
of police, who had apologised, and promised to compensate him for
the damaged items.
Contacted by AlterPresse, Michaël Lucius and Gessy Cameau
Coicou, respectively the Central Director of the Judicial Police,
and Spokesperson for the National Police, denied this information.
Michaël Lucius stated that he had been interviewed on 6 August
by Canal 11 journalists about other matters, and "at no time
had he been asked about aggression against a Canal 11 cameraman
or damaged equipment".
Interviewed on Mélodie FM, the secretary-general of the
Association des Journalistes Haïtiens (AJH), Joseph Guyler
C. Delva, deplored the incident, and called on the authorities to
make a public apology to the victim and to compensate the televison
station.
